HEIGHTENED AWARENESS SYNDROME
I stand ready to defend this unpopular position because I have hope for the future. Please let me explain. Anyone who can fog a mirror realizes we are on an unsustainable path of UNNECESSARY consumption. Let me be clear here, I to, love to consume, it is the unnecessary part I hope to take a look at. Albert Einstein said "We will not solve problems at the same intellectual level that we created them". (Well that is close and the meaning is the same). Coupling that with my belief that beating the dead horse of blame just spatters STUFF all over the place and doesn't add to a positive outcome I think we have a starting point to solve a very large and indisputable challenge. Being a Grandpa, I have realized the wisdom of the saying "Don't rob the young of their consequences-their is wisdom to be had in those consequences". Well we are the young in the history of this planet and if we choose to learn this lesson now, that wisdom will pay huge benefits for very long periods of time. Let me wrap up my humble attempt at logic here. As we pay more and more for the basic commodity of Fuel it will HEIGHTEN OUR AWARENESS of limited natural resources and we will then evolve our thinking to that higher level to meet this challenge. I promise that we will look back in ten or twenty years and realize that it wasn't near as hard as it seemed to be way back in 2008. Office Recycling – Using Desktop Recycling Containers
The office is one place that uses an incredible amount of recyclable material but often times has no program or set up to recycle. The average office can use between 5-10 cases of paper every week that's 5000, to 10000 sheets of paper. Factor in the bad copies the paperwork that is being trashed, the notes, memos and other flyers that normally end up the trash and an office may be throwing out between 2500 and 5000 sheets of paper in various forms throughout a week. Just about anything that is paper can be recycled, forms that were filled out incorrectly and trashed, envelopes from mailings, post it notes, and the notepad paper used to doodle and scribble quick notes on. Even phone message paper can be recycled. This makes it a worth while endeavor to get a recycling program or campaign going for your office. One of the best ways is to provide a Deskslider recycling bin under everyone's desk. This bin can literally be just one of the stackable plastic trays that can just be added to the already present stack. They only cost a couple of dollars if you purchase them new and most offices have some in the supply room that are not being used. Then individuals just place their recyclable material in these trays. It can either be collected at the end of the day or each individual can take the contents of their desktop recycling containers to a larger bin. It is usually a good idea to place a bin in a central location such as the copy room or next to the copiers. This will encourage people to place paper into the recycling bins and provide a location for people to dump the recycling trays. Depending on the set up you want to create you can even have someone collect the bins each day, empty them in then place them in the central location having individuals pick up the bins on their way into work at the beginning of the day. The important thing is to make the desktop recycling container something that people are going to want to use and that will not inconvenience their work space. People are more likely to use something that does not create a disturbance for them then something they are constantly bumping into because of its location. If this type of desktop system does not work for your office set up you can consider alternatives to the desktop recycling bin in the form of small wastebaskets or containers that can be placed on the floor to be used for recycling paper. These can usually be placed to regular wastebaskets and depending on the office space usually do not create the type of disturbance that a desktop recycling container might in smaller quarters. There are a number of ways to get people involved in office recycling. Using a desktop recycling container is just one of the many ways that offices can get into the recycling and conservation effort without incurring a huge expense or having to go out of their way to make things happen. It is often as easy as using materials that are already sitting in the office as containers for recycling and just encouraging people by providing them with a conveniently placed bin for paper. One of the things that I don't like about recycling is carrying those heavy bins to the curb on garbage day. It seems like every male in my house disappears when it comes time for that chore. Then I found Recycling Supply's mobile bins. Yes! Finally, someone offers recycling bins on wheels.
Mobile Recycling Bins from Recycling Supply come in all kinds of sizes, everything from containers suitable for a home or apartment to large commercial recycling bins. Fortunately, I only needed a mobile home bin. The Mobile Collection Carts by Maxi Movers first caught my eye. I liked the idea of their Document Security Truck which allows you to keep the documents you are about to recycle secure before shredding. This is a great idea for anyone worried about letting their personal information get into the wrong hands or for offices that deal with a lot of personal documents. However, I don't have enough documents for shredding that would justify buying a secure recycling bin. What I was really interested in was the Maxi Cube Trucks. These colorful recycling bins on wheels come in a variety of sizes and are stackable when not in use which makes storage a breeze. I also liked the Mobile Collection Carts by Rubbermaid. I ended up choosing the Triple Cart Capacity which is a cart on wheels and a set of recycling bags with the universal recycling symbol. I leave the cart next to my back door and when my indoor recycling bins get full, I simply empty them into the bags. The bags come in different colors so I use a color code for mine, red is for glass, blue is for plastic, and green is for paper recyclables. When garbage day comes around, now I simply wheel my cart to the curb. Everything is already sorted and its easy for the garbage men to dump the bags into the truck. Then I wash the bags out with the garden hose and set the cart up for next week. The recycling bins on wheels from Recycling Supply Company has made one of my weekly chores so much easier. No more lugging a heavy bin to the curb, I think these bins would be perfect for anyone, housewives, busy working women, or the elderly Your source for: Recycling Bins and Containers Wednesday, May 28, 2008
Who says going green can't be fun. Here are some fun and unusual recycling bin ideas from Recycling Supply Company that are sure to be a hit with everyone.
Battery Recycler. Have you ever wondered what to do with all those dead household batteries? I know I have. I've read time and time again about how dangerous batteries can be in landfills but I’ve never known what else to do with them besides toss them in the trash. Now, I've found the answer with Recycling Supply Company's Battery Recycler. The Battery Recycler looks like a giant C battery but actually holds up to 17 pounds of used household batteries. This is great item which reminds you to recycle your used batteries in an environmentally friendly manner. As usual, Recycling Supply Company is on the cutting edge of recycling needs. It is best to check with your local municipality to see if there is a place to recycle used household batteries. The State of California and some local municipalities provide special recycling centers for batteries. If your area doesn't offer this option yet, you should still take your batteries out with the trash. How about a recycling container for aluminum cans which looks like an oversized soda can? Recycling Supply Company's aluminum can container, the Can Tianer, holds over 325 aluminum cans and comes in blue, green, or grey and sports an oversized recycling logo. A great idea for schools, offices, parks, and playgrounds. The Can Tianer is durable and rust resistant, its sure to hold up whether its used indoors or out. An unusual recycling idea is Recycling Supply Company's Tube 'n Tote Flexible Recycling Container. The Tube 'n Tote allows you to pick up and move your recycling receptacle to where its needed most. It is lightweight which makes it easy for anyone to pick up. Having a barbecue in the backyard? Bring along your Tube 'n Tote. Is your husband and his buddies working in the garage this weekend? Move the Tube 'n Tote out there. The Tube 'n Tote is also a great idea for the workplace. Keep it in the break room and simply pick it up and move it for office parties or special presentations. The Tube 'n Tote is another great recycling option from Recycling Supply Company. Your source for: Recycling Bins and Containers Wednesday, May 21, 2008
